Archive and History of the Tucker Design Awards

This History of the Tucker  Design Awards is dedicated by the members of Building Stone Institute to honor the men and women of extraordinary knowledge, skill, creativity and vision - the Architect and Landscape Architect professional. They help make the world in which we live and work a better, more beautiful place.

From the original concept to the completed project the architect is the driving force. The finished built, restored, and landscaped project depends on concept, design, knowledge of construction, use of materials, and follow through to the final detail - by the Architect and Landscape Architect professional.

How the Tucker Design Awards came to be

reprinted from: History of the Tucker Architectural Design Awards 1977-2000 sponsored by Building Stone Institute © 2000

In 1977, following the death of then BSI Executive Director Frank P. Tufaro, I was hired to succeed him. My first thoughts were about what I could do that would help the industry and, at the same time, convince those who had placed their confidence in me that they had not made a mistake. One of my first calls was to Harrington A. Rose who was then publisher of P/A (Progressive Architecture) Magazine.

Harrington was one of several mentors, both in and outside the industry, who came to my rescue. They all had great ideas; a stone sample showroom and an architectural awards program were just a few suggestions. Harrington kept touting the idea of an architectural awards program. Something done on the very best level with top quality jurors completely responsible for the judging.

Somewhere in the midst of all this, a past president of the Institute, Beverley R. Tucker, Jr., president of Buckingham-Virginia Slate corporation, unexpectedly suffered a heart attack and passed away. His sudden death affected everyone who knew him. While writing his obituary for publication and recounting the many, many accomplishments this charming man of extraordinary talent who had given so much of himself to the industry - and who was a true southern gentleman - I found myself writing that an Architectural Awards Program named in his honor would be initiated.

That's how it all began. Once committed to a Tucker Architectural Design Awards program, we had to produce one - to honor Bev Tucker and to honor the professional architects.

The very first jurors were Richard Foster, FAIA and Hugh Hardy, FAIA. Building Stone Institute members Harold C. Vogel, Arthur A. Carrione, Joseph N. Moliterno, and J. Daniel Bybee provided the initial support. Ann Gillens designed the first Tucker "Statuette" which was made of black slate.

When Beverley R. Tucker's memorial stone was being considered, the historic Hollywood cemetery in Virginia, where he is buried, granted special permission for the memorial to be an enlarged version of the original Tucker Design Award created in cubic Buckingham-Virginia Slate. That was 1978.

We have tried to keep the high standards of the awards program, inviting when possible, large groups of architects to witness the presentation and to enjoy each others company.

Many people have helped with the program during the years - more names that we have space to include. We do however, wish to especially thank Gerald Gallegos, Chairman of the Tucker Design Awards 2000 Committee, and all of the sponsoring firms without whose support this celebration would not have been possible.

Dorothy Kender, Hon. AIA
former Executive Vice President (1977-2003), Building Stone Institute
and former Editor & Publisher, Building Stone Magazine
